Power Difference between Power Duration Curve and the Activity in Calendar

In some cases, the average power for a run or segment of a run may show a greater value than the value seen for that same duration in the Power Duration Curve. This can be seen below:

The reason for this is that the Power Duration Curve utilizes Elapsed Time of the segment, whereas when viewing the run in Powercenter, metrics are in terms of Moving Time. The difference exists because each time serves its unique purpose better in this way.

Why Elapsed Time?

If a runner completes 2 x 10minutes max effort with 2 minutes rest between, in most cases the average power for the two 10-minute blocks will be greater than if the same runner completed a single 20-minute effort non-stop. Elapsed Time ensures the 2-minute rest is considered in the first scenario to avoid over-inflating average power capabilities.

Why Moving Time?

A runner is more likely to understand the background of watch pauses and reduced power areas when viewing one activity in the detailed view. For this reason, it is typically more useful to look at moving time when viewing a single session.
